University Research Facility

Geothermal system design for a new research facility with high cooling demands and stringent environmental performance requirements.

Location

Melbourne, VIC

Year

2023

The Challenge

Design a geothermal system capable of meeting the high and variable cooling loads of a research facility while achieving carbon-neutral operation targets. Laboratory spaces require precise temperature control and high air change rates.

Our Role

4EE provided full engineering design services including thermal response testing, system modelling, and detailed design documentation. We developed innovative solutions for managing peak cooling loads.

Technical Solution

Large-scale borehole field with advanced heat pump systems and thermal storage integration to manage peak loads and optimise efficiency. The system incorporates heat recovery from laboratory exhaust to improve overall performance.

Outcome

System design approved and under construction, targeting 6-star Green Star rating contribution from the geothermal installation. The project will serve as a showcase for sustainable research facility design.
