Infrastructure
Melbourne Metro Tunnel
Geothermal feasibility assessment for one of Australia's largest transport infrastructure projects, exploring the potential for energy extraction from tunnel structures.
Location
Melbourne, VIC
Year
2020-2023
The Challenge
Assess the technical and economic viability of integrating geothermal energy systems within the Melbourne Metro tunnel infrastructure, including stations and running tunnels. The project required analysis of ground thermal properties across diverse geological conditions along the tunnel alignment, and evaluation of integration opportunities with station mechanical systems.
Our Role
4EE provided specialist technical advisory services including geothermal potential assessment, thermal modelling, and feasibility analysis for energy geostructure integration. Our team worked alongside the project consortium to evaluate options and develop recommendations.
Technical Solution
Comprehensive analysis of ground thermal properties along the tunnel alignment, coupled with detailed modelling of potential energy extraction scenarios and integration with station heating and cooling systems. We developed innovative approaches to leverage the thermal mass of underground infrastructure for efficient heating and cooling.
Outcome
Delivered a detailed feasibility report demonstrating significant geothermal potential, with recommendations for implementation in future tunnel infrastructure projects. The findings have informed planning for subsequent infrastructure projects in Victoria.
