Footscray Mixed-Use Development
Energy geostructure integration for a sustainable mixed-use development, leveraging foundation piles for thermal exchange.
Location
Footscray, VIC
Year
2021-2022
The Challenge
Integrate geothermal energy capabilities within the structural foundation system of a multi-storey mixed-use building to reduce carbon emissions and operating costs. The design needed to ensure structural performance while incorporating thermal loops.
Our Role
4EE provided energy geostructure design services including thermo-mechanical analysis, pipe circuit design, and integration with the building mechanical systems. We collaborated with structural and mechanical engineers throughout the design process.
Technical Solution
Energy piles incorporating thermal loops within reinforced concrete foundation elements, connected to a central heat pump system serving retail, commercial, and residential spaces. The design optimises pile layouts for both structural and thermal performance.
Outcome
Delivered an integrated design that reduced building carbon emissions by 40% while maintaining structural performance and adding minimal construction cost. The project demonstrates the viability of energy geostructures in Australian conditions.
