The Future of Geothermal in Australia

Prof Guillermo A. NarsilioDecember 202315 min read

Australia stands at a pivotal moment for geothermal energy in the built environment. As climate commitments drive demand for low-carbon heating and cooling, ground source systems offer a proven technology ready for wider deployment.

The opportunity is substantial. Buildings account for approximately 25% of Australia's energy consumption, with heating and cooling representing a significant portion of that load. Ground source heat pumps could address much of this demand while reducing both emissions and energy costs.

Several factors are accelerating adoption. Rising electricity prices make the efficiency advantage of ground source systems more valuable. Net-zero building standards increasingly require low-carbon mechanical systems. And growing awareness among architects, developers, and building owners is driving project enquiries.

Challenges remain, however. Upfront capital costs are higher than conventional systems, requiring developers to take a long-term view of operating costs and asset value. The drilling and construction industry is still scaling up to meet potential demand. And building professionals often lack familiarity with ground source technology.

Infrastructure projects offer particular promise. The Melbourne Metro tunnel study demonstrated the potential for extracting thermal energy from underground infrastructure. Future rail, road, and water projects could all incorporate geothermal capabilities, creating district-scale energy systems.

Education and demonstration projects are essential for building confidence. As more successful installations are completed and monitored, the Australian industry will develop the track record and expertise needed for mainstream adoption. The next decade will be transformative for geothermal energy in Australia.
